[Jester's Trek] Fit of the Week: Tackle Proteus

I haven't done a Proteus yet, and rather than doing the rather standard gank-fit version that lots of people know about, let's go with one that really emphasizes the strategic cruiser hull's versatility:

Four mid-slot Proteuses are pretty rare.  The usual three mid-slot Proteus goes for prop mod, cap booster, scram in support of a heavy gank setup with a strong tank.  I own such a Proteus myself and it's a fine ship.  Still, in low-sec fights or high-sec war-dec situations where bubblers are non-existent and hictor pilots are rare, it's quite useful to have a dedicated heavy tackler.  The Lachesis and Arazu are both decent ships but both generally favor shield-tanking and sometimes what you want is a big scary armor HAC fleet.  This Proteus is a companion to such a fleet.

The tank is essentially identical to the gank Proteus, producing nearly 30000 armor HP and 82% or higher resists across the board with a link ship in support.  That's good for some 230k EHP which means once this Proteus tackles something, it's going to require a major fleet to peel it off.  Tech 2 Trimarks, Imperial Navy EANMs and C-type explosive hardeners are all coming down in price lately and are well worth the expense given this ship's dangerous role.  The six Heavy Neutrons are also comparable to the gank fit, though this version has only one MFS.  As such, it's "only" good for about 550 DPS before over-heating.  There are other major differences from the gank-fit brawler as well.

The little-used Gravitational Capacitor subsystem has an important role in this fitting: it boosts the ship's warp speed to 5.2 AU/s in the hands of a skilled pilot.  That and the relatively quick align time will make this Proteus the first ship to land on the field after an initial tackle is established.  That leaves three open slots in the mids available for tackle, which I've filled with a long-range True Sansha point and scrams.  Overheated and without links, those are good for 50km and 20km ranges respectively.  Loki links increase those values to 66km and 27km.  As a result, this Proteus can easily hold the three most expensive enemy ships on the field down for the rest of the fleet.  The very solid buffer will keep the Proteus alive until the rest of the fleet arrives.  Armor reps, once they land, will make this tackler nearly impossible to kill except under overwhelming enemy DPS.  That goes a long way to protecting the investment you've made in the costly tackle mods.

And you will have to splurge on at least a few such faction mods.  Without them, this Proteus is CPU-constrained.  You'll also need at least Advanced Weapon Upgrades III to make this fit work.  Those things said, the role of "first on the field heavy tackle" is probably not one you want to take without solid SP and a pretty good bank account backing you up.  Fit a faction or dead-space MWD, BTW.  They don't give you any extra speed.  But they do cut down the major capacitor penalty associated with MWD fits.  And you'll need the extra cap in this role.

The best-in-class drone bay gives you a lot of options.  I like Valkyries and some EC drones, but it might be worth playing with a flight of medium web drones if you want to emphasize the tackle role.(1)  I also recommend a Quafe Zero booster both for speed and for quicker locking.  Synth Mindflood is also useful in this fit for a little bit of extra cap.  The easiest way to peel you off of your targets is by neuting you out.  As a result, you might consider replacing one of the scrams with a Small Capacitor Booster if you're going to be facing a lot of neut-heavy ships.

The bane of this fit is 100MN AB Tengus which this Proteus will find impossible to keep tackled.  Still, with armor links, this ship has a 94% Kinetic resistance and as a result the Tengus can't do much harm to the Proteus either.  That's pretty much the only weakness, though.  Anything else this Proteus tackles is in big trouble.

Every once in a while, the FOTW around here is "expensive, but worth it!"  This ship falls into that category.  Spending extra on faction tackle mods and defenses will make this ship more survivable and make it more likely that you'll bring it home at the end of the roam.  And for your opponents, there are few things worse than having a massively tanked heavy tackle ship land on their face at the beginning of a fight.  If your FC really wants to demoralize your opponents, he'll comp a couple of these monsters.  That's the lives of six enemy ships in his hands.


(1) Don't bother with the small ones.  They're worse than useless.
